BOWLS.
. SATURDAY AFTERNOON'S PLAY. '.The >7eather > was bright but a little on the when ■ there ..was 'a. 'good attendance on the bowling greens of thc(: city-and suburbs. . On - :looking ] ? round'at-the'vnow L players : it is surprising to i ! iiote the large ■number of young men who have: , '.taken .tpvthe green; this'year. ' Bowls,"itseems, J can no'longer, be called.an" "old man's, game." Though there , are still many very 'fine playerswho long have passed into, the autumn: 'of life, and even .those who have lived their "three , score years and ten" (among the latter some ■; formidablo bowlers), yot'there is no mistaking ' . the fact that' the younger element; in club membership is getting bigger and always' big- j ger with thf march of the/years... Arid—a note-. ; worthy fact—some of., these, young; players are still prominent'in moro strenuous sp6rts. Of course there aro uot a'few who hold that young 2 ■ men, should not play howls—that. having'the. ('■ agility and . virility of youth, they should .take inorj active exercise than is afforded by the 1 ancient .pastime that played in the days of Drake. There lis ibVdoubt. an element of truth 2 . in, : .-that. ■ but ,'it,must be . remembered' that':, there, • are • , : many■:'» young I ;men to whom ' : some Saturday .game , is ; desirablo,' lut " nevertheless cannot .1 afford such time for practice as, would.be essential, for'the'proper playing say; cricket' (i or teiinis; ','And many, of these would'probably. I
not play any game if it were not that the green offered attractions. So the younger man lias invaded the gre>n to some purpose during Clio last three 01 four years, and finding thu game a good one, is inducing others to 1 take it up too. CLUB. The following games were played on the 'Wellington Clubs greens on Saturday:— Liddle, Blundell, Adams, L. Blnndell (s.), 23; Arnold, Phtnmor, Manz, Ballingor (s.), 25. Tho first struggle for the 'Edwin Feathers proved a most valiant one. Wellington nere tho holders, and it dovolved upon Karori as tho first challengers on the list to try and wrest tho coveted feathers. Wei ington's team consisted of well-tried bowlers, nho, on paper, bowlers would judge capablo of retaining tho feathered baubles, but Karori had come prepared to do or die—and they did. It was a neck-and-nock struggle right to the ond. The teams .were ,12 all on tho ninth bead, 10 all on ,the thirteenth, and 19 all on tho; sixteenth. Then Earori, thanks to., tho excellent drawing I Went of its representatives, crept ahead - and won by tbo narrow margin of two points. Tho team was heartily congratulated on all I sides over its deserved win.. The teams wero—Wellington (holders): Fre-eth, Still, Brunskill, Webb (s.), 22.
