-The returns of the local Magistrate's Court show that. during tlio past quarter 41 civil cases wero dealt with. The aggregate' amount sued for was XSS3 18s: 9d,, and' the amount re r covered ,\£296.145. Id. Two applications were heard in Chambers, and two oWers,'other than -ludgment summonses, were made. Twentythree plaints wero entered and ton,distress warrants issued. : ,Two judgment summonses were also issued, and throo orders on judgment summonses wero. made. Within a .radius of two miles the bailiff served 22 summonses and other processes, while outside this area ' 36 , were served. Six distress warrants were executed. The amount of civil foes paid in stamps was •£2l ss. The .licensing fees paid in 1 stamps amounted to 15s. The criminal returns show that 28 persons were ; taken into custody—five from tho person, twelve for breaches ol the Polico Offences Act (two of whom wero females), six for breachea of the Licensing Act (including Ono woman), two under the Destitute Persons Act, one man and ono woman under the Lunacy Act; and two under the Carterton Borough by-laws..Of these, five wero'discharged aad 23 were summarily convicted. Nine paid finiis.Jhreo elected to undergo imprisonment in i lieu on paying fines, three suiforcd peremptory imprisoiiijion,t, five orders were mado, and/three persons ;wore convicted and discharged with a caution..
