Tho question of making inquiries, into tho details of the military services of Mr. H.: W. .Northcroft, S.M., ono.of tho Auckland Magistrates, with the view of conferring the , New Zealand Cross upon him- for distinguished bravery, is being urged upon the Government by Mr. Bollard (Eden). In referring to tho subject yesterday, ilr. Bollard , said that' Mr. Northcroft, who, was now about to retire from the public service, had taken part,in the Maori ,War, and Would haVo .been. roco'mmended for the Victoria Cross, but for tho fact that this decoration could not bo Granted ,to a colonial soldier. iMr.,M(issey said that thero:was no doubt that Captain Northcroft ■ was'.ono of tho best and - bravest of ,tko, colonial soldiors ivho took part in the Maori War.
