Kent) and council-of the Auckland Chamber. This • afternoon they "were taken' for a motor ride'to One Tree Hill, and' thence to tho •residence of ' the "Hon.' <E. Mitchelson, at Ecmucra, where, they were' entertained at afternoon tea; To-morrow morning the Kestrel'mil leave the: Ferry Company's wharf at 9.30 a.m. ; with the delegates on a harbour trip, calling at 1 the sugar works and the: Calliope Dock. 1 Sir Albert' Spicer, president • of' the congress, will arrive in Auckland from Kotorna 'on Monday night. A man arrested in Napier under a warrant issued at Greymouth was charged at the Magis-'. trate's Court on f Saturday" ; with having at Greymouth been gn.ilty of persistent cruclty to . his wife,, who applied for an order under tho Divorce and Matrimonial Causes Act'granting her, separation... Mr. M'Carthy,. S.M., pointed out that,no warrant for arrest could issue'under the; Divorce and\ Matrimonial Causes Act: Detective Hill said the warrant had scorned to him the most extraordinary one he had ever seen,'but it had been his 1 duty .to execute it. Defendant had made no attempt'to'evade ar- • rest, and in.fact hitdigone .voluntarily to the police station about • the- matter. Defendant was discharged. ' ■ CYCLING. Dunedln, October 24. • The Otago Centre league of New Zealand Wheelmen held a race yesterday from Mosgiel to Milton arid-bach to decide-who should represent Otago in the Timaju-Christchurch race next. Saturday. The roads were very heavy; and the competitors-had a gale of wind against , on .the-outward journey., Seventeen competitors out of twenty started, and the- race was won by .Maw, ■ who also put up the .fast- ; est time,-2 hours 57 minutes. In-addition to ■ -Maw,-the following from Otago will compete in the race.—Withey, Carnegie, and Donie- , .COMMITTED FOR-TRIAL. " Gisborne, October, 23. At the Police Court, Burgess-was committed for trial on a charge of failing to 1 keep proper books. TWO MONTHS' IMPRISONMENT.■ ■Masterton, October 23. . At the S.M. Court this morning, -Henry Edlestone; alias' Joseph Wilson, alias Arthur Yates, : alias D. Smith, was sentenced to two months' imprisonment with hard labour for the theft of a hide of the value of 355. He had,been previously oonvicted—in ,1907—for stealing. sheenskins' and sentenced to five years; in 1895, breaking and-entering, sentence five -years'; in. 1890, . for larceny, two years; and in 1888,. also, for larceny. ■
