■• '■ ■ '~—■-* —~— ■■- '.' "■'- (By Telegraph.—Special Correspondent.)Palmcrston, October 22. The annual meeting of the Manawatu Cricket Association "was held last night, Sir. C. H. Warden presiding. The annual report mentioned that, during the year, nine teams competed for the senior and junior championships, and, as pointed by the chairman, in view of the amount spent by the association, it was disappointing that more teams were not taking part, although the school competitions had been most successful. The balance-sheet showed a debit of 16s. 3d. The City Club wrote entering for the Wednesday competition. Permission was granted for schools to enter for both Wednesday and Saturday championships. An application by the Oroua Bridge Club to enter >a team for the Saturday junior championship was granted,' but - the application of the High School to enter a senior ,team was held over. It was resolved to begin the competitions on November 13, nominations for all teams to be in by November G.: It was also decided to arrange as -many representative games as possible. The.matter of preparing a pitch on tho show grounds ' was discussed, but no action was taken. A hearty- vote of thanks was accorded the- lion, secretary (Mr, F. J. Oakley) for services rendered: The question of obtaining a professional coach was discussed, and it was decided to endeavonr to securo the services of a suitable man ucxt year, the various school committees to , be asked to support tho movement. The following officers were elected:—l'atron, Mr. J. A. Nash; president,- Mr. Jb\ E. Watson; vice-presidents, Messrs. H. Couchcr, V. Harman, J. E. Vernon, Barraud, W. Devine, Bartholomew, T. Childs, Mills, and J. P. lnnos; solicitor, Mr. S. Greer. At the annual meeting of the Phoenix Cricket Club, the following, officers were elected:— Patron, Mr. E./I). Hoben; president, Mr. C. E. Dempsey; vice-presidents, Messrs. S. J. ; M'Kewen, E. S. Dixon,- H. Sinclair, J. S. Watchorn, C. White, and R. Davis jhon. secretary, Mr. J. T. Buller; treasurer, Mr. W. Kinnear; delegates, Messrs. P. C. Guy,'and W. Boon; general committee, K. Henry, G. and N. Watchorn, D. Boon, and J. Abbott; selection committee, Messrs. E. Denton, and W. Boon. . Several Palmerston exhibitors were very successful at the Hawko's Bay Show, Messrs! Slack Brothers taking prizes for Ayrshire cattle aud pigs, Mrs. H. B. Slack for pigs; and Mr. W. I. Lovelock for Holstein cattle Slack Brothers took the points prize for purebred dairy cattle, and Mrs. B. H., Slack for pigs. Mr. Ernest Short, of Feilding, took champion prizes for Homney rani and ewe, and: won the points prize for Romncy sheep, ~A euchre tournament between the Terrace End and Hangitikei Line Clubs took place" last night, and ended in favour of the Terrace End representatives by 45 games to 38. There are now twpnty-three inmates at' All 1 Saints' Children's Home, -which has been in existence for three, years. The matches are for valuable trophies presented by Mr. G. M'Donald (president), and Mr. A. Mahon. Notwithstanding that, a gale was i blowing across the ground, some excellent per- ! formances were put.up, notably that of Air. G. H. Byc'roft, who smashed the whole twelve . discs without using his second barrel. 'Mr. Norman btubbs (handicap i) was. second with : 18 points. These two, therefore, are so far in the lead, but the position may bo alterod , when the Saturday members compete. Master i Arthur M'Donald, a son of the president of i the club, and quite a boy, succeeded in-smash-r ing half- his, discs with a small bore"-, gun, ! which (especially under the difficult conditions)

' ' ■' ■■' At the Police Court to-day, John Grieei charged with being intoxicated while in.dinrjwot a motor-car was fined «s. On a second t charge of negligently driving the car, evidence , was given to the effect that the driving was vorj' erratic, and the car: ran over, a man named Johns, who was badly bruised. Accused ■ was found at.night, sleeping in-tho car, which , had broken down on. the Kangitikei lino. A ,- hne of SS> was indicted. . •
