IN REPLY TO "J. 8."
Sir,—Your correspondent signing himself "J. 8." .appears to be in terriblo fear that the general public might think that Sir Joseph Ward has again found popular favour, notwithstanding his so-called "misdeeds." Now, sir, I did not travel on the same train from Auckland as the Prime Minister,,or even from Ohakune, so do not pretend to know whether the 500. people who assembled at the latter station were; passengers or otherwise. If: passengers, as your correspondent states,- then the passenger traffic on the. Main Trunk is much heavior'.than I hare been given to understand. What an awful libel on, the sawmillers for the papers to Estate that they closed tbeir mills for the occasion, and the !fress Association agent should be more careful. I have no doubt that if we hear or see "J. 8." in his true colours we should discover him to be either one of' the "retrenched", or a disappointed office-seeker.— I am, etc., : " CHAS. CROSS. ;:Alfredton, October 11, 1309.
