ENTERTAINMENTS

THEATRE ROYAL. A- visit to the ■ Theatro Royal was a fitting termination to a pleasant holiday; and a_ large number of. pleasure-seekers: ended up their 'day in,, that manner.- The programme submitted was an attractive one, and.the pictures.were soreesed.in a manner, that, won the plaudits.of tho.audience. ! ■■ HIS MAJESTY'S. ■ Perfection, .in pictures is, very nearly-attained at.ffls'Majesty's Theatre.'.',, Certainly, an enterprising'management'selects only the best films on'the market, 'and the result is that''the :theatre' is nightly.'filled. Last, evening only .standing, room, was available, some ten minutes before 8, o'clock. A , stirring picture, The Convict's Sacrifice ",'U about the: best of tho first part of the 'programme.'- Having served a sentence, the convict.'is.' befriended by. a labourer, who is later seen in poor circumstances, his wife and family' starving; The tonvict meantime has received another " term "-.• arid 'breaks away;' from 'the prison gang.' He'.'"comes-.upon tho"hou&"sf his'oldfriend, and "'insists that heV 'tb, ea'rn .r'reward of'jeiOO with which to relievo the'misery'''of his' family, shall' give him . up : to, the Jpolice". 'The-' story ;has ; a pathetic 'ending. The convict, having m'ade'his sacrifice, ; dashes'aw'ay, and' the warders shoot him ■ down. " Through tho Netherlands'' affords almost as much information about the land of windmills as would a holiday ' spent there, and. it' describes the .quaint people and their quaint"Vays in tak. ing style. The picture is ahead of many others of ■ the " travel " class., : An excellent picture shows the R.M.S. Mauretania undor a full head of steam, and another, entitled "The Birth of the Fountain Pen," describes the numerous processes in the manufacture of halfcrown ' Stylos " - and. gold-mounted fountain pens costing several guineas. ." Sweet Twenty " is a' dainty .'little • comedy in which two young people quarrel and'forgive and generallv behave in an absurd manner. "Jealousy and the Man," " The Gambling, Fever," and ." Loyo and ' Sacrifice,'' are dramatic films possessing considerable: merit. For those who , care for a hearty laugh, such" pictures as "The Embarrassing portfolio" and 'Tve Lost . a Penny," Tiave been' specially included.' ' The pictures will 1 be presented throughout the week. . • ...

PICTUEES AT ,THE TOWN HALL. V Hardly a srat was to bo had in the whole of the Town Hall last everting, when, the special exhibition _of the Eoyal Pictures commenced. The pictures' were a good assortment one' of the most \ warmly appreciated being that, showing Endham boys at drill. . The en-tertainment-was a thoroughly enjoyable one, ... STAR PICTUEES. . " . Both matinee and evening, exhibition of the Star Pictures yesterday' were well attended, evidence enough that the entertainment has founds favour with the. residents of Newtown and the neighbouring suburbs, The'programme (which will be presented again this' evening at St. Thomas' 6 Hall) includes ] some most laughable films, dramatic" studies, such as "Love' and Duty,"' "The' Waif's Christmas,'" and coloured view? of a Venetian sunset. Mr. P. Wolfgang conducted an efficient orchestra.

' HAEEY EICKIRDS'S COMPANY. . It is with pleasure that the public will greet the announcement of. the opening of the Harry Itickards Company at the Opera House on Monday, night. The, outstanding turns are thpso provided by Mdlle. Eosina Casselli and her .dogs; Florence and Lillian in musical specialities; 'and the Kremka Brothers in an acrobatic'display. The programme'is studded with novelties. Walker and Sturm do a marvellous act with tennis racquets. Four racquets spinning in the air at-one time and kept going by one pair of hands is a "difficult enough feat, bnt add to this'acrobatic flourishes and humorous interludes; .and the quality of tho skill may be imagined. The season in Welling, ton. will be limited to twelve nights, and for the'benefit of children a special matinee -vill be given on Saturday, October-23. Mr. Allan Hamilton, who is managing the tour, states that ,£750 per week will nave to bo taken be. fore there is any profit in sight for the management. In spite of this enormous expense,' the prices of adimssion will remain the same—3s., 25., and Is. It will thus be seen that both Mr. Eickards and Mr. Hamilton have the greatest belief in New Zealand as a happy hunting ground for high-class vaudeville. 1 The box plan for. the first six nights and matinee is now open at the Dresden.
