THE HOME FOR RELEASED PRISONERS.
Sir,—"God's Own Island Bay" is in a fright. There are prison-gate homes-in'all the centres of Australia, and Auckland. If it Was a mental hospital there might, be some. ground ■ for tho fear of the w,omen and children.: As it, is, the class of persons objected to, aro .daily, fcnd - probably nightly, in theft midst without their kuowledg'e. In the proposed home, the inmates will be under, regulation and police surveillance.. The petitioners', charitably say: "Send them to the country." How about "too other fellow?" There; the women and children have, not. close neighbours,, lighted streets, 1 nor polico protection. In such a locality,' and its lonely surroundings, men could brood, and hatch, offences which' would never occur to them Under brighter influences. There is a commercial; side of the question; for where there are: a number; of persons located in the neighbourhood of; tradesmen, thert must follow expenditure. Lately,, these men have paid the pchalty of former transgression and should not be branded for all time, and hunted down.. Australia and New. Zealand hayo many an exajnple of men who have done time and are now worthy and respected citizens. ' 1 I am, etc.,' '■ . • v .• , ' . CHARITt. ,
