THE COMMITTEE "WOUND-UP." - COMPLIMENTARY REFERENCES. .■'.The filial meeting of tho Citizens' Unemployment Kelicf Committee was hold'in "the 'lowa Hall yesterday afternoon, his ' 'Worship the Major (Ur. Newman) presiding. There wore also present (lie Hon. J. E. Jenkinson, Messrs. ;\V. ftoot, Uco. Nnsti, E. C. Kirk, K.A. Wright, J1.1'., J. 1). Fitzgerald, aud Oeo. Willie (lion, secretary). . ' • -.■' '-...- : v The ciiaihnan remarked that th« object of the meeting closo the duties of the committee, with the exception of a few details, which' would not necessitate another meeting. As a result of the appeal to th'e public; eald Dr. Newman,: subscriptions- totalling about £19Gi had boon received. Iu addition,' £100 was given by the tramway employees towards the erection'of. their recreation hill, and the , corporation had added £100 to this. Other sums brought the amount paid out by tho pub. lio to £2141, as nearly us.possible. •'•With the work which.the City Council had put-in hand, and the aid of tho Government subsidy to th« Victoria College works, something like £4000 had beea expended. Not a shilling had-be.cn spent in charity, all money , paid out being for work done, nhen. the unemployment trouble ■wus at its height, statements were made that numbers', of men-were-looking for worknnd praying' that thoy would, not- find it. Thii statement, however, had been disproved by the experience of tho - committee. Hβ thought the committee.should pass a hearty vote of thanks to Mk.-W.-H.. Morton (city engineer) and to & s n w™ nt i Mr, IL A, J - I'atcrson), and also to Mf. Willis,. for the great amount ;■ of work Which they had.done- in assisting the committee.
