TAXATION IN THE MASTERTON COUNTY.

Sir,—Through the medium .of your valuable paper I wish to : draw your, attention to the demand I hare received from the .Mastorton county for rates. I have a small holding a little over 400 acres, valuation being JD2558, the demand for rates being .13s.' I-would not complain so much of this if I had a road, but the state of the track for this last twenty.'two years is simply disgraceful. For four' months of the year tho track is so-bad that: -X am unable to drivo stock to or from the place, or get a vohicle within two miies. Connty councillors and, county engineer are never>seen on tho road, 'and as for a roadman, one iras employed for a weok during the past three years. 'I may state that the pre-' vious owner,' after' seventeen' years, had to clear .out of the mud, and I shall probably have to do the samS if the taxes' increase as thoy are doing; I specially wish to draw your attention to the.'fact, that this same county , has money to spend on bioycle .and- footpaths ■ near Masterton, and the back blocks are unable to get even a stock track. ; I am, etc., f , ... ALFREDTON RATEPAYER. ■ October 4. [We would commend our correspondent's complaint to the attention of the ' county council.] V h ■ -■ '
