SIR ROBERT PERKS'S OBJECTIONS.
■ Sir Robert Perks, the:great contractor, although ho Was'knighted by the Liberal Government last year, has proved- decidedly rebellious -on the subject of the Budget. In Julyhemade a speech at Louth which one oi the Unionist papers! took joy in describing as a "revolt of Sit H. Perks." He said thatrin the House of Commons at tho' present moment agriculture was practically fighting for its life. But there'were kindred enterprises in tho vast industries which were also: concorned in the Finance Bill. Apart from agriculture- there was'tho building,trade- which was affected in a degree which he did not think the country had yet altogether realised,' because buildors who had -an interest. in developing, land, whether in London or the great provincial towns, or even in small villages, must recognise, if they carefully, read the Bill,! that in future "they: could make no speculation or investment'in , building land without beine required to hand over to the State one,-fifthof tho entire proceeds- they might make out of tho land. They must also remember that dealers ■ in land, men' who ma'de their living by buying and selling land, sometimes developmg it, buying it wholesale and selling it retail, represented a great industry., : ■ ■'■ ■
