'• ' | Speaking to a Dojiixio><* representative in connection With the expenditure of .tho .£52,000 ' loan, which itas again discussed, at Monday i night's meeting of tho Hutt Borough' Council, ! . Sir. JV. H. Russell, ex-Deputy-Mayor, ,taid :-r----"I am vory pleased with tho result, wliich is a , complete-' justification of tho-attitudo I, took lip during tlio'Mayoral contest.l understand, also,, that a certain motion antagonist io to tho Borough' Engineer,.was moved in committee by Councillor Pearce, ; seconded by the Mayor, and rejected by G. votes to 3, only Councillor Mow- ' bray, in addition Ho the mover and. seconder, i voting for-.it. It appears to bo the end of the . trouble as regards the- position of'-' tho engi- ' noer, and. it is scarcely possible, that the dccision can- be reversed, after the full investiga- •' tion made'by the council. In regard to tho . 'motion, which was; parried ~to. tho clfect-that the' engineer's • salary rovort tu ,f350 from the end of tho year, of course, that was inevitable with the near approach of the end of tho Expenditure .onVtbe present loan.' I am-strongly of opinion that a. proportion of tho •money which,' was' car-marked -for the diversion - of , Everest's Creek should be utilised in the„.main drainage works, as it could hot have been contemplated that the Everest Creek portion of the loan should 1»-kept-' intact;- whilo other portions should, bo drawn en. It will be remembered that the diversion of this creek Tvas originally reported on by the consulting engineers as being .an unnecessary expenditure at that time if it- was not agreed, to by the Petone Borough-Council as a joint scheme. I think that the, ratepayers will bo .rather chary about voting any. further money for drainage whilo this • .£3IOO for Everest's Creek, is held intact." _.'••• ■,-- ' \"As to .the balance-sheet, which was returned by the Auditor-General at Monday, night's meeting," proceeded.
