THROUGH TRAIN DELAYED.

. ■[ -,-:' The through express, ...which was 'due- from Auckland-at 4.25. yesterday.afternooh, did hot steam into the Manawatu Station'until 7;40 last night, the' delay. being, caused through ■ the engine running into; a landslip at Erua. It appears that the engine was.running at a fair rate of sp,ced; and everything appeared to be clear, in- front,.;when, suddenly, a mass of earth, loosenedby tho rain, fell in-,'front and at the side of theengine.. The earth was apparently detached by the vibration .of tho train. ' The driver at, once applied his brakes, but meanwhile his engine, had 'been damaged.:the cowcatcher being buckled under the body of the 'engine. The mailvan, which, was next to the engine, also suffered damage. ' -, , .■".-■■ Half-a-dozon jacks : were • soon at work under the damagW engine, bnt. it was' more thnn three hours beforo: tho. train could move on Onarrival at Marton another half-hour's delay occurred in. transferring the mails from the damaged van to a new postal car, and shunting the maimed car to a siding.' The stops of one or' two carnages also suffered slightly 'at the slip. The passengers naturally were a little excited when • the sudden stoppage occurred, but no,one was injured to any extent although several, had minor damages to show' one male, passenger exhibiting, a black eve' whiUt a lady sustained an injury to her wrist
