Sydney, en route to France. In the courSo' of an interview, JI. Richard said that many statements ■ respecting tlie condition of Now Caledonia were literary exaggerations; Ho.admitted that there had beeii an amount of poverty,. but the crisis was passing away. , . . -.'.. ■. , The cause of v the depression, the Governor stated, was duo to the cessation-of trans[portation. France alone, ••without drawing on colonial sources, had spent £5,400,000 sterling on this department; and the Btoppage naturally affected business. '.
