(From Oar SDCoi&l EeDorter.) / HUTT PARK COMMITTEE. PROPOSALS FOH IMPROVEMENT. Last night's meeting of the Hutt Park Committee was attended by Messrs. H. Baldwin (in the chair), J. W. M'Ewan. 'R. J. Southgate, J. L. Barlow, and A. Macaskill. A deputation of trainers attended and offered, with tne permission of tho committee, to do up the track with tau'at their own espeuse. On tho motion of Mr. Southgate the otier was accepted. To comply with a requirement of the Audit Department, a formal resolution was adopter stating that no money wa9 owing by the violf Club to the late trustees on. their termination of office. The Eastbourne Borough Council advised, in reply to a letter from the committee asking for a contribution to the funds, that their estimates for the year had been settled,.and therefore nothing could be done in the matter at present. Mr. M'Ewan characterised the attitude of tho Lastbourne Council as absurd. . ' ' Iho chairman thought that the excuse was a very poor one. -He mentioned that Eastbourne was only given a.share in the control of the park at their own request. \ They should be asked to reconsider the matter. It was decided, on tlie motion of Mr. Barlow, :? as f to reconsider their position, and, if not, did they still desire to retain their interest m the park ? It was also resolved to point out that the Eastbourne had .been verv lax in his attendance at the meetings of the committee. A financial return showed that there was a credit balance of £38 15s. sd„ but in the liabiliI, o( ' < ' owing in rates ttrttie Hutt Borough Council and the Hutt iviver Board. y Tho chairman remarked that he had. been asked to obtain information in regard to getting a - Bill through the House this session so as to improre their position. Ho was in-. that tliey had plenty of time to arrange prehmumnes if, they set to work at .onco. lhere was a proposal to raise a loan, and another to obtain power to lease cortain building sections on the park,-tho annual rentals to be devoted to the upkeep of the park; There was also a suggestion that the committee apply for. an extension of the number of days, on which they could-charge for admission. "If 'be- tramway runs down Racecourse Koad," added Mr. , Baldwin, "the leasing idea should prove a'success." . * Mr. MEwan: I would like to see the road widened, and the frontages utilised for building purposes. . The chairman: 'If that is done, air our worries and anxieties , will-be over. The question of drafting .the Bill is being dealt.with. : .... A vote of thanks was accorded Mr. F. J. Pinny for planting a large number of trees on the park. , HUTT SPRING SHOW For tho concluding day of the Hutt Valley Horticultural Society's show yesterday a very largo number of visitors attended both duringthe afternoon and evening, Tho lino collections, of spring flowers evoked much admiration. The excellence of the ■ various exhibits, togcthor with the strains of an orchestra, combined to make the .exhibition very enjoyable to,those present.; The officials, who were all in attendance, are to be. congratulated on holding ono of their most successful spring shows. It will bo interesting to note that Sir. G. S. Titheradge, tho well-known actor, who takes a great interest in horticulture, states .that although he has been practically all over tho world, ho has , never seen bettor bulbs than' those coming from-the Hutt, and Mason's- Gardens in particular. ONE NAME OR MORE f At to-night's meeting of the Petone School Committee, the 'chairman, Mr. D. M'Kenzie, will move,'in reference to the latest interpretation of the Education Act: "That the Minister for Education be "asked to amend tho Act, so as to give to committees the'power of selection of applicants who are called by advertisement for appointments to school vacancies, and also regarding these teachers it is proposed,to 1 transfer. The committee desires four' names to be submitted'in each ease." The Education Board , has spent nearly <£200 on grading and metalling the ground, and tho tar is required to finish • the work properly. .If tho .council will grant, l tho tar; it is'proposed hi get up'a "working bee" during. the vacation, and arrange for tho children to do tho work. "School committees," said Mr. "p.re always short of funds, and I hope that the council will make us this grant. ■ PETONE CATHOLIC CLUB. The annual meeting of the Petono-Catholic-j Club,': which was. to have been-held last night, was adjourned] for a fortnight. Tho report states'that lowing to transfers from: the disI' trict the club has lost the services of several en-ergetio members, but against this a number 1 of new .members have been elected. The olvb >as represented at the conference of Catholio . clubs,-held- in Wellington, whero : some important measures for the advancement of .Catholic clubs were discussed.' The first of the half-yearly reunions with tho Wellington j' Catholic Club took place in' Wellington, the ; - Petone: members beiug successful in tho games tournament in connection with the reunion. ' : . . JOTTINGS. , The annual -meeting of the Hutt Valley Club 1 was held last .night, Captain A. Samuel pre- , siding.over a good attendance. A number of i new members; were ■ elected.
