Further describing' what ho did when at tho North Polo on April 6, Commander R. E. Peary states that ho went ten miles beyond Ilia camp at tho Polo and eight miles to tlw right of tho camp, taking photographs and depositing records: Ho also studied tho horizon with a telescopo for possible land. Commander Peary informs tho State' Department that ho took possession l ' of tho entire region on behalf of tho President of,the United States.' A RACE FOR THE SOUTH POLE. SCOTT'S PLANS. MOTOR- SLUDGES, PONIES, AND DOGS. (Rec. September 13, 11.15 p.m.) London, September 13. Captain Scott, who commanded, tho "Discovery" Antarctic, expedition, has published further details of his contemplated further trip to the South Polar regions. Ho hopes to start in August, 1910. Lieut: Shackloton-will give Captain Scott tho benefit of the experience gained on his. rccent expedition. It is estimated that Captain Scott's expedition will cost £40,000. Captain Scotfc intends, with. a view to investigating ■ virgin : areas, .to establish in King Edward VII Land a second baso, 400 miles eastward of M'Murdo Sound. . He will take Manchurian ponies to carry food to the foot of the glaciers.' The place of the ponies will then be taken by Eskimo dogs.' :' The explorer will, utilise improved motor sledges, which have been satisfactorily tested in' Norway.
