T. ■Mackenzie)..arrived here last night,'and y put'in a-very busy day to-day with deputations, visits, .etc.' This morning . the Minister, - ac.compamed by Mr. E. Clifton (Director of Experiujent Farms) and -Mr. W. A.. Boucher (Government Pomologist), visited tho Friinley Can--nin" Factory, and were shown over the works by :Mr. E. Basil Jones, manager. .'A -deputation, cPmp'rising Mr. J. A. Miller (Mayor), Councillors .Garnett, Mackersey, .and W." Smith,: afterwards waited on-' thei Minister with .reference to 'the question of borough, severance. The Mayor'said that, some months "ago, petitions had been sent: to Wellington from - residents of - certain -localities , praying for severance.. Loan proposals for certain works—water supply, sewerage, and:.;electric lighting—were to, be submitted to the iratepayers, but tho council did. not 'know what rate to strikb : o\nng to. the -uncertainty ing' out of tho severance question. : .What-was wanted was that a commission . should bo set up to deal with'the matter, "and then, a start could be made with, the. looin proposals. His Worship asked- tho 'Minister, 'though tho matter was' not in his. Dopartnwnt, :to intertat - himself: in getting'- the borough boundaries :defined. The-Minister replied that, so far,-ho hardly-thought that ' the output warranted it. Ho would, however, discuss the. matter fully with them.inter..' visit Napier to-morrow. • The annual general meeting of tho Hastings Bowling Club was held last' night,-Mr. -W. ;J. White (president) being in tho chair..'The report stated that there'was a credit balance of JUS 17s: Id.:and surplus fcssets over liabilities' amounting to' 195.. 7d. llio chairman congratulated momhors. on the, success of the past ytar, and reviewed the successes-of various rinks representing tho club both at -Hastings and . elsewhere.,- Mr. -C. Hughes' was; elected president,- and Mr. AY. T. Ballinger (Welling-' ton) was appointed -delegate to the. Northern Bowling Association., The '.chairman '.. stated that. Mrsl .M'Leod -had presented to the club a large photograph of tho late Mr. D. M'leod, and -he, moved.'a -hearty' vote of' thanks to Mrs. M'Leod. It was decided'to open tho green on Saturday, October 0.
