INSTITUTE OF JOURNALISTS.
THE WELLINGTON BRANCH. : There was a large; attendant at tho annual' meeting of 'the .Wellington branch of tho New Zealand - Institute of'. Journalists
yesterday .afternoon. The annual .report recorded an uneventful but prosperous year,' and threw out somo suggestions for the : infusion 'of greater energy . into: the branch. One of- theso, was-..that" "fchero should bo arranged a' series of' meetings of members for tho purpose of bringing into- prominence tlio fact that the branch is a real live thing, capabio of action when action is necessary, 'and always alert in'tho juterests of those associated .with it." : Tho proposal is' that opinion is- expressed, that-"mombfcfsM of- the local branch of'tlio institute should bo regarded by .every working journalist ns one of the ! ii rs { S? '. us duties - is 'very regrettable that tho. institute should .not bo looked iipon by members of.-tho - profession:' as. tho Law Socicty .is looked -upon hy members of the legal profession. Many prominent and capable journalists aro outside tho fold.' Nonmemborship, when the character of the institute'and tlio purposes for which it exists .are taken into account ,ought properly : to mean unfitness for membership. The committee believes that this doctrine-should be encouraged as tlie-.corrcct doctrine, and' must be cnoouraged until it is. accepted,, if. tboinstitute 'is to reach full efficiency." Reference is made to the action'of the . branch in moving to secure. better treatment of tho. press reporters by local bodies and institutions.
