THE NEW FREEZING WORKS.
QUESTION OF SITES.
THE ENGINEER'S REPORT. . ' Mr. Mitchell, the engineer for the Wellington larmers Co-operative Heat Freezing Companv. has reported on some : of the sites offered tor tho works as follow:—
• ' i : Waingawa. Ihis,; the first site visited, I consider suitable provided that the solo right of taking water from . the race on the property is obtained. Ihe spring inspected wilt also bo a valuable asset, the water here being of a particularly good quality and of considerable volume. ■ lhese-springs, however, must not be . depended upon, and i strongly adviso getting jour water-supply from the rivers, being permanent and reliable.... In regard to drainage, I should adviso that, if possible, the right be acquired to drain on the river, beds, but,, fail-' ing this, it. will be necessary to. acquire a considerablo area of the shingle flats surrounding •if- a percolation system, for which the land is particularly well adapted, f o!?r r€Colu that for this purpose at least 200 acres bo acquired. , Woodside. "This' Site has one advantage .which is not ~ed by that at Wbingawa, {hat is, accessibility to the .banks of the river, and, therelore, sole control of the water obtained thereirom..ihis will, however, entail the construction of a siding, of some length, as the railway t, , some . distance from the river, and •nt "Oft. above it. The cost of such a sidine will be considerable, although not so great as to debar this site from consideration should it i f ul J?-5 ■ as , a depot central to your fat stock districts. The land here for drainage is not/quite equal to ..Waingawa, but still good fo"Ztion'^througE 050 ' 0t a ' ShiDEly Pigeon Bnsh'. . ■ . s°pply for this site, in the ahsence .of any data to the contrary, does not appear-to me to be depended upon, and as I TnI"H, PrO;POS ? 4 rainin e into tbo Wairarapa Lake the supply from this source could not be r understand that the adjacent creek St u r ?'?u a su PP ] r ample for all requireSw ri i th6 l f ost; o f such a scheme will be great, unless there are strong reasons pointi. h, 18 s ?'° as a depot for fat stock, I think the cost will debar its inclusion among thelites suitable for your purpose. at the Waingawa, but, of coursc, wo h.tvo not been blind to the fact, at any time, that tho company will, and very properly so, too, consider its own interests purely when selecting a suitable site for the works. -It is this fact e t allows one to think that the prospects or ( Masterton being tlie town nearest to the site aro exceedingly bright. So far as we can gather the choice of sites lies between side and waingawa, ami the latter appears to possess greater natural advantages, while its value from a strategic point of view cannot very well lie overlooked. It is said, and it seems to bo the general impression, that as soon as the Farmers' Company commences operations that another meat company will establish works at the Waingawa, and any company that may have its works south of the » aingawa will suffer accordingly. Then there is the splendid response that the citizens of Jij.asterton havo made to a scheme submitted to them within the last few days. Wo can scaiceh think that the Wellington Farmers' Meat Company will reject JtfOOO, even if the articles of tho. company have to be slightly altered m order to accept tho offer."
