Mr. J: Stowart, who lias been engaged by tho Wclliugton Harbour Board 1 as n wellsinker, to ascertain tho depth at which a solid bottom exists beneath tho Petono ;Wharfi completed his duties on Saturday morning. Ho has been boring at four places on tho portion of the wharf where tho sagging took place, arid ho has found that firm gravel exists at an averago depth of from 05 or 9G foct to 113 feet from tbo deck; level. Tho members of tho Harbour Board will pny a visit of inspection to tho wharf on Septombej 14, after which tho steps to bo taken to strengthen tho structuro. will bo considered. Tbo piles could ..bo "spliced" in order to bridge the great distaiico between tho wharf and tho solid, but it is not considered likely that this will bo ridopted. There is a proposal to reet tho present piles on heavy wooden planking, which would ;)io on tho top of tho 47ft. thick deposit of bluish-grey mud, .
PETONE NAVALS. "- Tho members of ■ the Petono Navals gathered in full force at the Drill Shed on Saturday night to do honour to Chief-Petty Officer L. Parrant, who is resigning from tho oorps, after having' completed twenty-threo years service. Captain Ellis, who presided, .presented'to'tho guest a set of silver cutlery on behalf of.tho company. In doing so, ho reforred.in highly congratulatory terms to Mr. Parrant's valuable and lengthy service, and wished him every success in the future. Upon rising to reply, the recipient was loudly cheered. He returned thanks for.the present; and acknowledged tho compliments accorded him. He mentioned that ho had serVcd ' under six captains', fourteen lieutenants, and no fewer than 530 uieii had go.no through tho company since ho had been a member. Among those present were representatives of ,tho Petono Football Club and tho threo fire, brigades. , . Musical items were contributed by Messrs. Nolan, Smart, Brace, Jim Ryan, Appleyard, Dawson, Blake, and others. .' •■' . JOTTINGS. ■'Mr. Leo. Curtis, who has resigned from tho Hutt Borough Council staff to take up n position on that of tho Potono Borough Council, commences his new duties to-day. Prior to leaving tho Hutt, Mr. P. R. Purser, Town Clerk, on behalf of tho . Etaff, presented him with a handsome silver-mounted leather bag, suitably inscribed. Tho Potono School Committeo has decided to appoint Mr. W. Foster, M.A., of t> o Mount Cook' School, to tho hradmastership of the 'Petono School, •in succession to Mr. Homo, who. is'retiring'at tho end of tho year. ■■;■ .'' ■ • ■-.
