MR. W. C. BUCHANAN'S OFFER.
A SOUTHERN APPRECIATION. ". Referring to the offer, of Mr! \V. C. Buchanan, M.P., to provido £6000 towards the; establishment of an experiment farm* iu Wairarapa.'tho "Lyttelton Times" says:— "It will bo a great pity it'. , Mr. ,\V; C. Buchanan's generous oifev of £0000 for tho establishment of an experiment farm*in the Wairarapa. district, cannot bo'turned to somo useful, account by the Government.' \.Mr.' Buchanan 'is naturally anxious to see' the money spent iii his own electorate and for tho .immediate benefit of--his own constituents, but unfortunately the , sum is'not largo enough for tho realisation of the. scheme he has iu view. . ~'-.- But tho Minister has suggested that Mr. Buchanan's splendid offer: should, bo'.utilised, in nnother direction, and we have no , doubt that tho'member for Wairarapa will bo ready to consider tho suggestion. If the money: wero employed in improving the strain of dairy cattle, or in specialising'in .seed .culture, or oven in establishing agricultural Scholarships it would give results which would bt> warmly appreciated by tho farmers of Mr. Buchanan's own district: and of other 1 parts of tho Dominion. It would be too mucli to expect the generous donor to ; transfer his. gift to the Agricultural College at Linpoln,' but if tho governor of that institution; had at •their disposal they could very,''-soph ,extend the sco'po of their operatiionavin siicl)*-a way that Mr: Maclienzio?\vduld ; ',havo littlb eauso to complain of, tho .absence, of practical work from their course of-.instruction;'-'. , : .
