RECEPTION OF TEAM-ARRANGED. A-meeting* of-the-council of the. New Zealand Amateur • Athletic; Association, held last evening, was attended ,by Messrs. A. Marryatt(io : the ..chair),- J. F. Thompson, E. L. Chatfey. W. P. parkin, W. H. Pollock, and'A. Davies. ,By way of welcoming,the New Zealand team,! which , competed so successfully at ■ the Brisbane championship meetin'g, it; was "decided .to ask the' Mayor (Dr. Newman) to preside at an official reception to be held in the .Concert Chamber of the Town Hall to-morrow, at 5,15 o'clock.; It' was' agreed that invitations,should be •• extended ■ to the Acting-Prime - Minister,' | members of : Parlivnont, ; -councillors', ; £nd re- | presentatives of sports'bodies..'-Regret was expressed that, as the southern members of the . team, would have . only a : short stay. : in ' Wel r lington, it would not be' possible .. to discuss the formation, of an Olympic Games. Committee.';'- ■ 'A request was made by tho South Canterbury . Association, who are holding the ,New; Zealand five-mile cross-country championship at Tiniaru on September D, for medals ana i badges. The association desired to be supplied with the medals before the date of the race, in Crder that-the winnefs might receive their, prizes ~ that evening. • ,Tho' council agroed to forward tho medals promptly. Tho Australasipih: Union wrote -further" in regard to -the proposed tour of :Mr. Reg. ; E. Walker, of the -Durban A.A.C., and Duncker (hurdler)!,or Hefferon (distance runner)., Consideration 1 was deferred, pending .'receipt, of additional particulars, ;. • i !>. , The chairman fecoramend«l that !ste'ps should be taken to induce- more interest in athletics on.the part of the Southland Centre. 'Nocoinreceived from the oentre *for some' time past, and' the only reply now to hand was a telegram:! "Regret no funds available. :. Vaape." .The Southland delegate intimated that' he had written to 'Dr.;-:. Snow, (president) and Mr., A. ; A. Paape (secretary), and, under these,.circumstances, ;it. was de-. cided to postpone action .until, replies/were received to these lptters. For' the purpose of -rousing greater interest in athletics,; m a number of neglected districts; Messrs.; A.; Marryatt, A. Davies, : J. F. Thompson,'and H. S.
