GOVERNMENT COW-TESTING SCHEME.

NORTHERN WAIROA HONOURED. In conformity with the -recent, decision of the Government to send instructors round the country in connection .with dairying . (says our Dargaviile correspondent) A tempt-, ing" offer was made by the Agricultural Department to Mr. Clayton, manager of the Northern Wairoa Dairy Jactory,- to act as one of the instructors: Mr. Clayton, therefore sent in his resignation to the directors, and at a Friday the. position was reviewed. An amicable arrangement was finally' made, and Sir. Clayton's valuablo services will be retained ■:• for ; tho Northern Wairoa Factory, the ■.-directors offering a higher remuneration." ,•Mγ. Clayton is now the highest-salaried dairy factory manager in the Dominion. Under his management Northern Wsiroa butter has. attained a hißh position at Home, and at a meeting of the directors on Friday the chairman'announced that the firm of j.-' provision merchants, Liverpool, had made a series of tests, through, which Northern WakoaJ'actory butter had most triumphantly passed. The chairman explained that the firm in question ponsessoe 70 shops in different parts of the north of England '• and the west of Irela-nd, and, with a view, to giving their thousands of patrons the pick of" New Zealand butter, they entered upon 'a most searching investigation. During last' season 12 boxes from each of 24 of the roost important New Zealand factories were taken regularly each fortnight as. .supplies arrived, and a most rigid test was made. The test proved that the best and.. most acceptable butter-from the consumers' point of view was that of Northern Wairoa and Thames Valley (Pacroa). When the firm in question were satisfied that these two butters reached

the standard they required, stops - were taken to procure the output of both factories, and representatives were sent to New Zealand to effect the purchase of the forthcoming season's output if. posEiible. Thames Valley, however, ha'd dealt with the. question before the arrival of this gentleman, the directors having decided to consign. The local company spent-a long time on Friday considering the matter, and the-final decision has been ■ deferred for the present.; Severe disapproval was expressed at the Government offering big inducements for the services of dairy managers at the'commencement, of the dairy.season, when it is;impossible almost to get vacancies satisfactorily filled. .
