DEBATING SOCIETIES.
On Friday evening St. John's Debating Society debated the motion:—"That Britain owes her Empire more to her colonisinp po<vere,tlian to her military prowess/' This was affirmed by Messrs. L. Andrew and H. Reid, and negatived by Messrs. M. Galloway and C. Redgrave. Tb.o' speakers were followed by four others, one a colonist' a'lid ' three fighters. The ohairman (Dr. Gibb), in hits criticism of the • debate, rilaced the most effective speakers in the fol/ lowing order i—Messrs. C. Redgrave (1), L, Andrew and 11. Galloway (2)', E. M'Donald and H.Newborry (3), H. Reid andC. Andrew(4), and R. Lynch (5). In the third round :of the' debating to\irnam'ent, St. John's were to have niet' St. Anne's, but circumstanoes prevented this.
