FARMERS AND IMMIGRANTS.
The New Zealand Government (says "The Pasto'ralists' Review") it was. recently, cabled, .decided' to .stop assisted immigration f Orthe present,". 1 "'So. .far - ispurely townspeople, are .in question, ' the decision does not' occasion • muchlament. But the need for an immigration of capable agricultural labour isrby no means lessened by the rather trying experienco that the ;Pominion is ' enduring. It appears as if the New Zealand settlers do not yet possess the majority of the voting power to. insist upon the continuance of a modified, immigration policy. But their power, like that'of the Australian farmers, is growing, and ; their claim for consideration will •, become., stronger. As showing the attitude of the Australian settlers, rcfere.icc may bo made, to resolution in favour of'immigration carried at the Farmers' Conference recently held at, Sydney. A motion adverse to immigration was indeed tabled, but it met with ia crushing defeat. '
