Tho weather was again delightful for tho golf championships, and, as on previous days, further surprises were effected in the ohampionship contest The fourth h*at (still unfinished) has eliminated the last of those who have previously held the New Zealand championship, and left the semi final to pre viouslj untried golfiing talent Mrs Bidwill, Miss Rattraj, Mis Williams, and Miss Stephenson 'all e* champions), and Miss Christio (proaont chdmpion) are all now spectators Per haps the greatest suiprise of all was Miss Stephenson's defeat She had been playing such solid golf all tho waj through that her participation in the final round was looked on as assured Yet the qualitv of tho play may be judged from the lact that Miss Brandon, the joung Wellington player who defeated her, put in a very hot round, and then went out again anl signalled a record for the links At the outset of the tournament, the ladies' links recoid was 92, but, since then, Mrs Williams has twice done 89, and Mrs Bevan and Miss Biandon did it again to dav Miss Stephen eon on Saturday 'did 92 a'fter losing three stiokes m a hollow log, so that a new record has thus been created, and signalled four times in ono meeting Mi«s Humphreys's win was a veiy remarkable one, as her opponent was "Dormj four," and both were playing strongly Tho Coronation Medal went to Miss Brewster, of Now Pl}mouth She would also have taken the Donnelly Cup on the same score, but, while others of the Taranaki contingent were entered for it, Miss Brewster was not Sho was not thought to havo a chance, and so tho cup went to Miss N Gome as next best scoter
The driving competition was won by Miss Hamlin, of Napier, with three inches short of 156 yards Miss B Hmdmarsh, of Napier, was second, with 151 vards, and Miss Campbell third, with 149 yards The semi finals and final of the champion ship tire to bo plajed tomorrow Mrs Bevan and Miss Humphreys, and Miss Brandon and Miss Cow per meet in tho former

THE CHAMPIONSHIPS' (By Telecrapb —Special CorroaDondantt mT , ' Palmerston," August 23 The feature of to day s play was the fourth round of the championship, and great interest was evinced in tho play, details of which are as follow — i | * Miss Cowper (AVangamn) btiat Miss Hannaj (Wellington), 8 up and 7 to play Miss Brandon (Wellington) beat Mibs Stephenson (Ngauiotu), 2 up and 1 to play Mrb Bevan (Otaki) beat Miss AVood (Christchurch), 2^up Miss A Humphries (Christchurch) beat Miss 'Gould (Otago) at tho twentieth hole The "boil oven" of this morning's play was tho defeat of Miss v Stephenson b> Miss Brandon Miss Cowpei's victory over Mis,s Hannay was gencially anticipated by her friends, and, as was generally .anticipated, a good fight was put up between Miss Humphries and Miss Gould, the -former only winning after her opponent 'had been "dormie 4" at the fourteenth hole, which necessitated Miss Humphries winning tho next four holes They wero all square" at the eighteenth holo The niLetoonth hole wbs also square, and Miss Humphries won, on the twentieth.
UNION AND COUNCIL MEETINGS (Hy Tolosraph - l'rcss Amnclallon 1 nil. t' i , „ „ TT Palme «ton, AugUbt 23 Ihe Ladies Golf Union and Golf Council both held their annual meetings to-night The Golf Union has now 26 clubs affiliated Tho election of officers resulted as follows —Pre sident, Miss Rattrav (Dunedin), vice presidents, Mrs Hope Lewis (Auckland), Mrs von Zedlits (Wellington), Airs Vernon (Chri-t chuich), ALrs Butterworth (Dunedin), and Miss Stephenson (Ngamotu) Mrs Mellsop (Mana watu) was re-elected hon secretarj It was dc ctded to hold the next home dubs' Coronation Medal contest on the last Inday in Maj It was also decided that, in future, delegates bo appointed by tho club committees The Golf Council meeting resolved that clubs should come to a' mutual arrangement about visiting members' fees, that the championship programme be considered by all clubs, and viewed at next annual meeting, that next vear's ohampionship meeting be held on Shirlej Links, Christchurch, and that instead of first and second, prizes in future handicap events one pmp will be devoted to players not exceeding a fifteen handicap, and ono to those over it.
