! (Before Mr. W. G. Riddeil, S.M.) ,' , . BOARDINC TRAMCARS. A charge of attempting to board a tramcar whilst in motion was brought against H. E. Evans. Mr. Fair, for defendant, urged that the case should be dismissed, since the wording of the by-law was to tho effect that any "passenger" boarding a car was liable. The information did, not allege that defendant was a passenger and, furthermore, he was not, for he ' had not, at' the time of tho alleged offence, boarded tho car. His Worship remarked that the by-law no doubt needed amendment, but ho could not dismiss the charge on that account. Defendant would bo fined 55., and 7e. costs. , BOARDINGHOTJSE THEFTS. ' Wm. Kennedy pleaded guilty to two ohargos: (1) Theft of an overcoat valued at £1155., the property of Apoetolis Raphtellis; (2) theft of a pair of trousers valued at 12s. 6d., the'.property of Nicholas Wine. He was sentenced to two months' imprisonment with hard labour on each oharge. A third information alleging the theft of a railway pass was withdrawn. In the course of tho hearing of the charges, it was stated that accused went through■ the rooms of,a boardinghouso in wliioh ho was stopping, and took' the artioles mentioned. STEALING A CANARY. A plea of guilty was entered by a young man, to a charge of stealing a canary, valued at £1. Defendant was convicted and ordered up for sentence when called upon. AT THE ATHLETIC PARK. A prosecution was instituted by Chas. Patchett (Mr. P.. Jackson) against Jno. Taylor (llr. Herdman) for using obscene language at the Athletio Park on June 30. A fino of £3 and, costs"£3 45., in default fourteen days' imprisonment Was imposed. CHARGE OF THEFT. A chargo of stealing ono pair of boots, valued at 155., the property of Wm. Williams. Hβ wag remanded, to August 27, Chief-Detective Broberg stating that other ohargos wore pending. 'INSOBRIETY. . ' One first offender for insobriety was convicted and discharged, another fined 55., and a third 10s., in default 24 hours' imprisonment.'Wm. Severn was fined 105.,; in default 48 hours' imprisonment. - OTHER CHARGES. An order against . Jim Wong Sing ' for maintenance of: a child was increased to Bs. per week. In the case of a charge of using improper language, preferred against Kathleen Brosnahan (for; whoin Mr. E. B. Brown appeared), an adjournment was granted to August 27. A prohibition order, to ■ obtain for. one year in the licensing .districts of Wellington and Hutt, was issued against Alioo Amy Thompson. , TRUANCY. A number of parents were prosecuted by Mr. J. Dinecn, Truant Inspector, for failing to send their ohildren to school. Fines were imposed as follow :-rffm, Mercer, 53. and costs 75.; Dennis Jlulhano, ss. and costs 7s. f Francis .M'Donald, 10s. and costs 75.; Hannah Owens, 35.; George Reeves, 3s. and costs 75.; Chas Smith, ss. and costs 7s. BY-LAWS. ■ For allowing his chimney to catch fire, Archibald'M'Leod'Wilson was fined ss.'and costs 75., in default 24 hours. • Percy George 'Jeffery was fined 10s. and 7s. costs for driving a vehiclo by night without lights, and was furthor ordered to pay ..costs 7s. for driving-round a corner at other than a walking pace.
