TEMPERANCE WORK.

MKS. KATHERINE LENT STEVENSON'S .■: •- VIEWS. ; (By Telegraph-Special Correspondent.) . . Auokland, August 16. '. Mrai Katherino Lent Stevenson, of' Boston, the world's, president of the arrived in Auckland to-day from' Sydney, and. Was given &■ mayoral reception. In the course of an interview Mrs. Stevenson, speaking of temperance work, said while in : Australia she found a strong feeling growing in fayonr of prohibition. Just as New Zealand had in tho past heard much of the non-succoss of prohibition in America, so the people of New South Wales were having quoted to them the non-success, the alleged iniquity, and the terrible amount of drinking going on on the quiet in prohibited areas in New Zealand. There is no question of tho success of No-Liconse in America, ;Mrs. Stevenson says, though eho adds that she would prefer a system of taking the local option thoro once in three years.like wo do in New Zealand. At present America has three systems at work, iii_ soine States prohibition being State-wide, in others applying to counties, arid ih others to cities and towns. In. those States where the.elections como once a year it is just a continual fight; and biennial or triennial elections/ in Mrs. Stevenson's opinion, are preferable.
