RETRENCHMENT.

Sir,—ln theso. days of rule of thumb retrenchment I have'been surprised for some weeks that no ono; has questioned tho appointments of the twl shorthand reporters -to the Police Commission, 'both of wlom are "Hansard" reporters, ■ cacli in'receipt of a pormanent salary of £300, work b-r lio work, yet they are soleoted for a good fat'job, viz., £1 a day (each), and all travelling expenses; in addition to vthoir.;- permanent, salaries ; whilst scores of others equally'competent aro being dismissed, and ' know not .which way to tnrn to, find tho means, tosupport themselves and families. This, is.;v.roirenchmont with a vengeance, and ..disgust,;;'all right-, thinking men.-' Such appointments would-bo a perfect God-send to a very largo number of deserving men. —I. am, etc., ;; -.. ; .
