ACCIDENTS AND FATALITIES.
FOUND DEAD. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) , , Christchurch, August B.' ; John Edward Robinson, 29 years of ago, .was found-iii a ' kneeling position on the floor, dead in his room in a boardinghouso about midnight on :Saturday. An inquest was opened this morning, but as the post-mortem was unfinished the inquiry, was adjourned. Deceased was .a brass,-mouldor, employed here. There'are no/suspicious circumstances. ■ CAUGHT BY A LOCOMOTIVE. . ■...,.-,'■ Auckland, August 8. Yesterday afternoon a man named Frederick Cptt-erill was killed at Ellerslie railway station. He was in charge of a cart, and just as the' train was coming in he jumped off the platform and attempted to cross the lines to get'to his horse. He was caught by the train and run over. All tope has been abandoned in regard to the missing man Baxter, as his drowned horse and the trap were found in the Little Grey River. Baxter was a native of Sunderland, England,' and is supposed to have friends at Nelson. • : ■■■■:' SUICIDE IN A CELL. ■ , -' Wanganul, August 7. At the inquest regarding the death of Frederick Moorhoiise, who strangled himself in Wanganui Gaol.on Thursday night, a verdict to the effect that he. took his lire while in a state of < mental derangement,- caused by over-indulgence in alcohol; was returned. SUDDEN DEATH. An inquest was conducted at the morgue on Saturday afternoon by Dr. M'Arthur, Coroner, touching the death of Ernest Edmond Redding, a ..young man -aged 29, and employed ■as fireman and bricklayer at the corporation destructor. ■ Dr. Fj'ife, -who performed a .post-mortem examination, stated that there were no marks of external Injury. The stomach'was ■somewhat inflamed , at the cardiac end. .The heart was in every respect healthy. . The brain was quite normal, and there was no evidence t of .any-, injury to it, and nothing was found- that'•showed deceased suffered from epifepsjv ■■'As*fco the cause of death, unless it were poison, the- only other cause was the condition of the luiigs. _ Sudden death could occur in , early pneumonia. '.■■•■' ■ To Station-Sergeant Darby: Thore was nothing in the-state of the stomach to indicate poisoning except the inflammation/nor was there anything, "so far as he could say at : a cursory inspection, of a poisonous nature in ythe medicine which deceased had ■been taking. , ... . ■ ,
; Dr. Bowerbank said, that deceased had consulted him on August 5 relative to an injury said to have been, caused by a strain. Except fo-r this, he appeared to be in .good health. Witness, advised him to lie. up for some days. ■ From appearance'and tasto, the medicine produced :.it the inquest was what witness had orderod.. 'None of the, ingredients he prescribed was poisonous. Ellen Elizabeth Redding, • widow of decea'sed, said that her' husband had been .' in ill-health for about a fortnight. On Friday some medicine.'was procured for him, according to a 'prescription .given by Dr. Bowerbank. He took one dose of this medicine at about 5 p.m., and at about 7 o'clock he died.'- Deceased 'had been .subject 'to fitn-sinco -hie'had sufferbd concussion whilst working in the Kilbirnie tunnel. The night before ho died he' had to sit up all the time, as he could not get his breath when lying down. The Coroner said that he would reserve his. verdict pending the result of an analysis of the contents of the, stomach and the medicine. ': . .
