THE RELIEF WORKS.

PRACTICAL APPRECIATION. Tho total number of applications for work received to date is 665, but a numbor of the mon axe dropping out into steady employment. One man, who has been tided over a few weeks by tho relief works, and has now secured a permanent job, has expressed his, thanks to the secretary of tho committoo, and has promised to show his appreciation by giving tho committee 10s.; of his lirst week's wages. , THE MOUNT VICTORIA ROAD. It is stated that the original idea-of'con-tinuing tho Constable Street-Mount Victoria Road right up to the Signal Station, with tho possibility _ of a connection being made with tho Hataitai Road, has been abandoned in favour of a now. scheme. The new idea will; it is ' understood, be >to carry the road to' its present terminus, right above the spot where tho tunnel passed through the hill to Kilbirnie, and finish the terminus off with a flat on. which vehicles, etc., can turn round with easo. The. mon are at present omployed on the small stretch of road which was skipped by last week's gang, and when they have finished this a start will jbe made metalling the formed road, and cutting through the hill-side at Constable Street, and forming the approach to tho hill road. Tho metal for the new road will bo obtained from a quarry on the eastern side of Mount Victoria. Citizens who have boen following the progress of the new road will no doubt express r disappointment at tho fact that the road is not , to be formed right up to the Signal Station, but perhaps the Relief Committee may yet devise ways and means for both the metalling and the carrying of the road the full length of the' hill-top,'' ' ; ''"': "' ■ ' - OTHER WORKS. ' The amount paid out in wages to the Wadestown. gang yesterday was £68 Us, 6d. as against £60 Bs. 2d. for the previous week's work.- The men who have just been paidaveTaged£2,per man as. against £2 7s.' 3d. per man for the previous week. Tho weather accounted for the difference in the amounts earned. ■' .''■•'■' ■'•'..'■ .- Twenty men made a start-at Anderson Park yesterday. The objective'of this gang is to fill in a portion of the park that has sunk, and give 'it the original-grade. This particular portion of the ground will join on to the part 'already under grass, and will also. be. sown. The funds available wero not considered sufficient for tho original, plan of. earthworks, by loosening the clay banks with explosives. ' , ■ Another gang of men is to be set at work tree-planting on;the hill-side above Kelbrime Park. It is estimated that the Relief "Committee's recent vote of £100 will finish this work, and still, leave some, money over for tree-planting elsewhere. •',-''■•■■■ SUBSCRIPTIONS. MORE WORK'IN OHRISTCHURCH. . (By Tolesraph .-Press 'ABaoclnUon.) :.' ' Chrlstohurch, August 5. ' The fine weather being experienced at present, ■ which is permitting much outdoor work to be.put in hand, has had an appreciable effect in diminishing the number of, apparently wbrkless' men/in. the, streets."The efforts of the Citizens , ; C6niiuitt«€,'and of the public bodies, have no doubt largely contributed to this improved state, of affairs'. Comparatively few men are to be seen consulting the lists posted in front of the City Council offices.
