Evidence was given by Leonard. Cockorj, lioonseo of .tho Royal Hotel, but formerly a policoman. Ho stated tiiat he had been in tho service from 1898 to 1907, leaving with a good character, but becauso ho had not boon on tho list ten years, ho got no~ refund from the Providoht Fund, whereat' a constable dismissed from the service- would bo entitled to rcfuud of Contributions. Witnose also stated that constables should bo bettor paid, and should rcceivo an'additkmal uiiifbrir better house and travelling allowances, and, on leaving the sorvieo, each constable slioulo bo given his merit-list for use if iieod bo is applying for a position elsewhere. Constublo Roid, on behalf of tho nqlict of tho district, brought several compliant; beforo tho Commission. These were princi. pally about tilkged unfair promotions. Hf lnniGclf had no complaint to make. Sorgt. pew also gavo evidence. Tho bur den of his complaint was that chief detectives were Riven preference over uiiifnrnipd sofßoauts for sub-inspectoratos.
