Recently it became known that ' certain articles were teing offered to various shopkeepers • at below cost price. After, keeping strict watch for several days, Sergeant Mathcson and Constable Taylor yoJtcrday interrogated an ' cxprcssffiim as to liow ho had come into possession of certain goods. As a result of his' replies he was arrested on a charge of thoft from certain chemical works. Tho officials then 'searched 'the expressman's house, Whore ! they found goods valued at over £50/ Sergeant Matheson • then proceeded to the manufactory; where he arrested a , storeman for , alleged complicity in tho' offence. ■•■■•'' # ■-''■ ■Tho expressman has, it is understood,' made a statement to the police, He declares Mwt fivo moiithe ngo- he got a' cask of'efeatn of tartar from the etofenlan in return'.for' nioiiey lent. A ittottth later* tho storomari procured for him' seven dozen boxes of Outicura soap. The expressman, it is ■alleged, told tho other man that it wou'd square off £4 lOe. of what he owed him. Prior to that date he had' obtained other goods from his alleged confederate. Some of theso goods had been sold by him. ,: , ■ ■■. Tto storoman ha>s.inforaed the police that he first became acquainted with the other man,about twelve months ago. He borrowed . £21'0s. from him, ■ and .was unable to repay 'it. His companion in' troublOi he. alleges, said thai if he could not-pay ho might get ■ him some pills, which ho'didy and was'allowed ■'- 15s. off tho amount which he owed. , Subse-" qucntly his friend procured 1-cwt. of cream of tartar and other goods. Only tome days ago he borrowed £1 1 fora the expressman, to whom he gave further articles. Tho accused will appear before tho Court to-moi'l'ow, when a remand will be asked foJ ponding further inquiry' and search.
