AT DAIRY HERD SALES.
THE STATE.AS BUYERS. ; Fine pedigree Jersey 'cows were last week dispatched from Hawera for tho State's Experiment Farms. These had been 'purchased for the Government by Mr. J. \V. Deem (Stock Inspector) at the ■ dispersal'.sales of Messrs. T. it; Exley and T. Linn, weMnown Jersey breeders. Mr. Deem told a '"Hawera. Star':' reporter •that 'it. was , proposed to advance .the. interests of'the dairying community .by. establishing experiment' stations similar to those operative in other . countries. The Government; is purchasing: dairy'.stock, purely for utility, and liot for show purposes. It is intended to prove what can _ lie done in tho way of dairy farming on scientific lines, and tho" plan tho Department has' ill' view will bo of .considerable benefit to t-hb:-industry. Ail the details in reference to each animal will bo placed on record, and the amount of milk yield, butter-fat, etc., shown. ■ • r The cows Eureka and Uhlan were purchased from-Mr.'-Esley.' Eureka is described as a splendid cow, .gcod constitution, was 0110 of the best dairy,cows on Mr. Exley's-farm, >and : gave over 3001b. of butter-fat-to tho.end of . April. Linn's sale were Little' Fancy and Little Rose. Tho former was described as tho pick of Mr. Jenning's herd (Waitara). when Air. Linn bou«ht her. In tho show ring between New Plymouth and Palracrston' sfte, was shown 'five times, and secured fivo second prizes. She was sold at 85; guineas." /Little, Rose, bred, by -Airs. Jennings, was said to bo,another exccllon't cow. She tests 5.3,; and' Tfas secured for tho; Government at 40. guineas. Another pedigree cow Mr. Deem purchased privately in tho Okaiawa district,' and this animal,also ( comes from the best of. milking strains. - . 4 They were apparently not excessive prices thdf Mr„' Deem paid, for at Mr. Exley 1 s sale 65 guineas was paid, for a, cow (Duchess Elma), and v at'Mr.;Lihn's'sale, a'cow (Fury's Fairy) sold for 86 guineas and a cow (Golden Glory) for 52 guineas. , Mr. Deem had previously -'purchased' a full-sister to-,Fury's. Fairy. . .• - • Soma dairy farmers (says the "Star") express alarm .-at tho Government's action in ; purchasing tho pick of Taranaki dairying, nerds, and say that tlio Government, should import fresh blood and leavo the farmers in possession ;of: these splendid ; animals. But,' says an expert, ,as the'very best strains of dairy cows procurable are in New Zealand, the- Government . would be ill-advised to go, further afield for animals for their experiment'stations. ..- - '
