Mr. Matthew Murdoch, ex-City Councillor, has received advice of • tho death of his son, Alfred 11. Murdoch, who mot his death in a; railway accident at Bnrnaby, on tho Cana-dian-Pacilic railway. The deceased was a former member of the College Old Boys' Football Club, and tho Tborndoa Swimming Club. :

Tho Colonial Office , envoys, Sir Charlca Lucas and Mr. A. A. Pearson, arrived in Auckland yosterday morning, and are ' the guests of. Lord and Lady Plunket at Government House (states _ a Press Association telegram). After spending a week at Eotorua, Sir Charles Lucas and Mr. Pearson will leave Auckland for' Sydney, and will proceed from there to Fiji. l They'expect'to -reach Homo about the Beoond week in October.
The complimentary "social" at Auckland on August 20 to Sir. W.' F. Massey, Leader of the Opposition, promises to be a very successful function. Sir. Lang, M.P. for Mannr kau, will preside', and ■Bpcc-ches will be delivered by,' Sir. Herries (M.P. for Bay of Plenty), Mr. Monk (ex-SI.P. for Waitemata), Dr. Bamford (a representative elector in : Mr. Mas spy's district), and; perhaps, by other visiting M.P.'s.
