i (From Our Spcclal Reporter.) s ' —* ; — HUTT VALLEY TRAMWAY BOABD. Last night's • meeting of the Hutt' Valley Tramway Board was attended by Messrs. J. W. M'Ewnn, in the chair, Robert Stevens, H. Findlay, J.Austin, and H. Baldwin. . . In an opinion concerning the method in which! the issues should bo placed before the ratepayers, ■■ Messrs. Buniiy, Pethcrick, nnd Aysori stated that the alternative proposals could not be submitted. If the board's resolution was proceeded with endless confusion might arise.." , • • '•Mr.Austin, advised waiting until ' Parliament met, when an amendment could be asked for to the Tramway Empowering Act, so as' to onable the board to: put the. proposal beforo thin district as a whole instead-of holding separate pells as at present They' should also obtain power to purchase the Hutt Park line. , : ■
. Mr. Findlay objected on the ground that there had been delay enough already... The matter was held over. , , Mr. _ Stevens> thought that the ratepayers' would' riot vote for a loan of .£IOO,OOO for the larger electric scheme at present; they should go in. for a steam system to start with. . Mr.' Baldwin gave notico of motion- to rosoind the .previous resolution in favour, of placing the two schemes before flio people. This was in oonsequence of Mr. M'Ewan's report on the position, and the legal opinion. The chairman said that; with two members absent, he did not feel justified: i:i' waiving the necessary notice to the motion. Therefore, they could do-nothing in tho matter that night.; *■•..•• j :v, " . : Mr. Sanderson Cooper, of Petone,' was -ppointed out-of eleven applicants to tho vacant clerkship, and.'the. meeting adjourned.
