(By Telcßraph.-Speclal['.Correspondent.)/. ■•-■.-■ /v : / Wahganiii, July 25; -/The WangantTh; Fire;.: Brigade's'-.'. annual smoke .concert on Friday was- a great' suci-' cess, as and was attended by a large number of business men, The usual toast-list was; gone .through,' a break being made for, the"presentation of .service decorations. tain Spriggens. and Fireman .Beauchamp re-; ceiye'd . the . association's, gold'star for '25 years' service:, Silver medals .were presented ■to.four firemen;and service-bars for varying terms.to.nine others. The brigade intends to make an addition: to its plant in the-shape of a 'motor hose-reel for guick travelling• to distant fires,- and is now engaged in raising tho money to purchase it. -A thousand 'pounds 1 is required, of which tho' Borough Council has contributed -,'£300,0 and 'business firms and the -public, will'be asked to -pro-.; ■vide. the>est..One firni Jed off at the con.'cert:with £25, and the-example was -imrne-' diately'followed by others with promises of substantial -amounts, 'so. 'little ; difficulty ■should be met: with in raising the total. It is reported that coal s'eains bave been found in the Raetihi district, close to • the. Main Trunk, but. no. details have as: yet reached town.' :' ; ; , : . ' . ,;: '■
• Remington,' M.P.., is: reported-to-be somowhat seriously indisposed; The doctor .says he. must. have. perfect : quiet, and be is 'unable to'see anyone. .; ■"-..■:, '■•
■ The "Herald ". supports .the denial of the rumour that men , ; are leaving the bu'shfelling at;Rangltatau, owing to : dissatisfaction..-. It says dnly.,'two or three 'have left fromvthe easternportion of the block, and;.these have gone/on; account ,of sickness.. : •-',- '_.■-. -...A traiy/with two men, swerved/into a. tramcar in-the Avenue,qn Saturday. Tho shafts .snapped off, btit rio'otber damage was done, and. no': one wasi hurt. It. has ■• been remarkable that the freedom from accidents since the cars started 1 running ■ is probably due'to the.fact that Victoria: Avenue! and Glasgow Street .are. wider- .than, and -don't carry—-well j '■■ quite so • much' traffic as Lambton Quay and Willis. Street';.. : v ; .-..'. : . /Wauganui-and Marorp played senior .and. junior golf matches on.Saturday. The former chiti had a double win. The seniors won by 9 to 5,'-arid the, juniors beat/Maroro in every game.// ' .'■ -\- ''<"'"'■'' •'.'.-:'■'".■ "'!)•''. '..-'■'■■ '■ ':',■ ■ ', /■. At/fcptball the .Wanganui reps, beat the Awarua reps, on Saturday by 20 to 10, and ■ feel quite happy. • -How they' did. it. is.a bit of. a-puzzle, for.Awarua' is'a strong, heavy, and fast,-and well-trained team, and Wanganuii.has riot had'any .practice together. Local footballers provide as good material as. any in. New. Zealand, but; the., reps.'rarely practise, together.- Hence, their, win' against' a. good provincial team only occurs • with bluempori /frequency, and the honours are chiefly scored against sub-unions and other secondrate teams. These, : however,-.never r seem'to suggost any improvement in. methods. A curtain-raiser to the match was'a game be-, tween the AVanganuiarid'■ Taihape .primary schools, which was-won by Taihape-by. 6 to. 3. :Half the population -of Taihape soemed to be in towii to witness the. matches, in. full expectation of seeing their teams score a double win, but did not Teckon. on "Wanganui's luck.:: . ■.■'', V : - -..'.'■'
At the annual meeting.of the "Wanganui Bowling Club the report showed , a good position, of* affairs, though there: is a small deficit"pii. theJyca'r;owing'to heavy expenditure in entertaining•'.the. large.-' number of visiting/teams. Tho assets nearly double the. liabilities. /Mr/. J. H. Ked'sing.was elected , president, Mr.G. Carson-vice-president; and Mr. W. Eodwell secretary and treasurer. Strong -exception was;jtakeii..to,a' notice of motion-for the Northern Bowling Association's annual meotirig.that tbe two.-'rink per. club system be 'abolished in the annual tournament, .and/that';clubs bo' allowecl as many rinks.-as-tbey please. One speaker' said his inquiries; showed- that this meant, if; tho tourney-, was held in Wolliiigton,; 170 rinks would be entered from that city alone, aiid it-would be the same if held in Auckland. What chance would country cliibs have? It would take a fortnight to get through, "and country clubs: could; not;bo, expected to; wait all: that time. It: was ' contended.. that the open-door 'policy .would drive the; country' -'clubs'- out- of the association and load to them forming a body/of their own. . Finally , it was resolved, to instruct^ the club's delegate to vote against the proposal, as tho club has strong objection to the suggestion; also that the proposal be submitted to a mass meeting of bowlers' at' the 1 annual tournament. ■'
