NOTES ON THE RACING. j IDi Glkkcob.l St. Bill opened favourite for Uks Onslo-w Handicap, hut backors seemed to doubt his ability to win on each day of tho mooting, and befoio tho betting closed fihoro was snp]x>rt for Martyriuin, Sweot Angclus, Longnor, a.nd Toa Tuhi, Martyriuin was, favourite on the machine. St. Bill was again first away and led throughout, though ho had to bo sliaken up at tho fuiish to beat White 'Cockade. Considering tho state of tho going it was a meritorious performance for St. Bill to win with his heavy weppst, but ho seemed a triflo lucky, for Wlinto Oockado was finishing much faeter. Tho RiccarWn liorso wus one of tho first away, but lost hia position round ilio lxAtom tnru, and wlien Iris ridor got lrim going on tihc outside ho was too lato to catch St. Bill. Excepting tlio wniinor, tho well-backed candidates wero disappointing. King's Prize and Pukeivai ware the favourite selections for tho Crofton Handicap, but neither of them returned supporters a dividend. Tho field was about the poorest class that com noted in any race ai the meeting, and-' at the end of a slow-run race Llauworn won comfortably from Splash, who was well clear of Pukewai. The placed horses 'had all raced on tho two previous days of the meeting, but none of them had fillfd a place in either of their efforts. Llanivern had not won a race for a long time, and Mr. \V. Davies, Wljo has a largo team at Trontham, has not been too successful this season. This, combined witii the fact that G. Prioo was malting his last appearance in the' saddle for the stable, caused tho victory to bo greeted with a round of applause. But few -among ihc public liad supported, eitflier of tha first two horses. Aur&tus and Rendrock being withdrawn from tho Corunna Hurdles, form ]x>nited to Waiono as tho turner, for tho Waiuku gelding, had run good seconds on tlio first .and second days. C. Cochrane, wlio had tho mount, was niggling at Waiono the wholo way, and though lie was headed by Tosajni | three furlomgs inm home, ho came again jind scored comfortably at tho finish. Kolso improved on liis .Wednesday's nnmiiig, ajid will bo a useful hurdlor when, he has had aliodier race or two. Te Arai'was tho best backed of tho six slaitcTS in the July Steeplechase, but there was also plenty of money for Irish. Tlio race was practically . a duel between the pair. Young) on IrishJ appeared bent on setting a warm pace, and l'orter, on Te Arai, rode a waiting raco until the last mile. Running down tho back , tho last time , they' were together, but To Arai jumped hotter than his rival, and also proved the bettor stayer. In tho last half-mile the raco was all o\qt. Te Arai will-only have 31b. more to cairy in tho Grand National at Riccarton than he Von with on Saturday. As he is such a fine jumper'it looks as if he ■well be among tho number that complete tho course in that event., It was a coincidence that tho placings in the July Steeplechase were precisely tho samo as thoso in the Wellington Steeplechase on Wednesday. Lingerer agaiii failed to Stay tlio distance out. Dcerslajer 'fell iu the first round, but neither the horso.nor his rider was, injured. Sweet Aiijrelus was the only withdrawal from tho Winter Oats Handicap, for which Menio Zealand was easily favourite, and Wimmora was best backed of the other candidates. When the last t«o furlongs wero entered, Merrio Zealand made his iun and won with the greatest of ease, 110 is a very useful horse at ncltor weights, and up to tlio present has not been harshly treated by tho ' handicappers. Gaelic, who ran second, was tho biggest outsider to run into a place at ,tho meeting. Sir JPrisco, on whom natch had tho mount, did not finish among tho first half dozen. vWimmora also fiuislicd in tho ruck. 13en JoiiEon and Commander wero scratched for tho Final, Hurdles, and of the fivo starters Ifcndrock "carried most money. Coraaon, tho second favourite, hit tho second hurdle and got rid of his rider. Exmoor, Bclario, and Rendrock raced for tho Inst hurdlo in Unci but'liolnrjo was first to land, and after a great finish 'just" beat tho favourite. But fqi running down tho last hurdlo it is possible that Rendrock' might have'gained the judge's veidict, for ho appeared to be quito tho equnl of IJolario on tho flat. Exmoor was in the van for a, milo and a quarter, and finished dose up to Belaiio and Rendiock, but Kairoma, nfter going a mile, stopped to nothing and finished a furlong .behind. Tho Kia Or.i Handicap was a good betting laco, but backers this tinio had tho form worked out excellently. Miscast and Timothy- wcro equal first favourites on the machine., and thoy finished'within a> head of ouo another, nhilo To l?u, who «as third favourite, finished close- up fourth. Timothy got into a bad position in tho middlo of tho raco, and in the opinion of many, would have won with.better^luck. As it was. therpwero ' somo .'who thought ho had cauglit Miscast. Tho latter raced in tlio. colours of Mr. It. W. Paterson for tho first, time, and has consequently proved a good '■ purchase for tho Wellington, sportsman, who, by tbo way, told all his'frioiids to backtho.
