PalmerstonjJuly 22. Tho police to-night raided tP Chinese rest donee and arrested aj Chinaman on a charge of manufacturing opium suitable for smoking from tincture of opium. Five men were found in the room whore the smoking was taking place, one almost insensible. A large quantity of opium paraphernalia was also found. Seven Chineso will bo brought before tho Court on Monday. .. 'A SERIES OF CHARCEB. Auckland, July 22. At the Police Court a lad named ThomasHerbert Ellison was remanded on thirteen charges of theft of money, postal notes,, 1 banknotes, and cheques, valued at £« lUs. 5d.; also on a charge of having forged the name of his employers, Ashman and Company.; Ho was admitted to bail in two sureties of £50 each. SCHOOL BOOKS. Auokland, July 21. The' Board of Education has decided to accept a grant for free sohcol books. It waa stated that tho board had been too oon- - sciontious in declining, to make tho required declaration, knowing that the grant wasi insufficient. Mr.,Groenslado, M.P., said that the Wellington Board lost £60 over the ■ transaction, and,the Auckland Board would lose about £160. , NEW ZEALAND DAIRY ASSOCIATION; Auokland, July 21. The New- Zealand Dairy Association bavo just concluded a record year, tho turnover lor twelve months, ended June SO, having been hearlv a quarter ,of a million, whilst the output' of butter in' tho same period was nearly 2000 tons. Both totals show an increase of about 20 per cent, ou the previous year's results. ' CAPSIZED. Auokland, July 22. ■ The scow Tramp, from Tairua, with a cargo of logs for tho Great Barrier, is reported to have capsized in a gale off Slipper Island, on Monday night. Here aro no details.
