AN IMPORTANT CASE.
LOCAL BODIES AND THE ARBITRATION i ',' ACT. Mr. D. 11. .Findlay has been retained by the colonial executive of the Now Zealand Trades Councils, to argue a case (to bo heard by the Appeal Court) as to the jurisdiction of the Arbitration Court in respect to.the employees of Harbour Boards, municipalities, and other local bodies. The case will, in all probability, bo mentioned in Court this morning, whon a date may bo fixed for, its hearing. Mr. M'Giegor, who reprinted the Otago Harbour Board in a recent caso in this connection, is coming to Wo lington to * appear for the Dunedin authorities, 'and Messrs. Izard and Weston, of Wellington, have been instructed to appear for the Harbour Boards' Association The question involved is an important one both tor .the local bodies and the industrial workers of the Dominion—particularly tho general and wharf labourers who are members of unions. If the Appeal Court holds that the Arbitration Court has no jurisdiction it is understood that tbo labour unions, backed by the Trades Councils, will make an. effort >to have the Act amended, as thev hold that'such' a , judgment would'defeat the intentions of Parliament.
