THOMAS LONG AND -MELAINE LEBEAU.
A COURT INCIDENT. (By. Telegraph.-Prcss Association.) '' Chrlstehurch, July 20. 1 The sensational utterances of Thomas Long when before the Magistrate's Court last Week answering a charge of being found on premises without lawful exouae'wore given no less sensational proof befaro Mr. Haselden, S.M., this forenoon. Long had stoutly maintained that tho female witncsß for tho prosecution was his wife, and the woman on oath denied the assertion no less stoutly. Tho case was adjourned to give Long an opportunity to find proof of the marriage. To-day Sub-Inspector M'Grath' produced a certificate of marriage between Long and Melaine Lebeau, in 1902. Mr. Haselden said tho certificate was hardly sufficient. Ho asked how ho was to connect the woman with it. Sub-Inspector M'Grath said that if necessary he could produco the woman's ad- ' mission, . 1 Mr. Haselden said that even if Long wero married to tho wpman, that would not give him an "excuse for breaking into Moody's house, but having been in custody since his arrest no' further punishment would bo inflicted.
