TURAKINA OR "SCOTS' LAND"?
: In Scots land I It is close- upon thirty years since T first went to Turakina (writes our travelling correspondent),, and at" that time it was, 1 to my mind, one of the prettiest settlements: I had yet seen, in .-New Zealand. Even at that distant date, it had a quaint, od-fashioned look, and.l thenthoiigit, and am still of the same opinion . that Inrakma" was just-as'pretty in name' as it was-, in, its surroundings; After- many years; I ■have again made a journey up''the Turakina River,.and it now seems'-'as if ; it was wTongly named;' ,; It should, bo "'Scots' land. Starting' at the' township, one meets Scotchmen, ; on all-sides. ; And all tho way up the river the settlers are. from Caledonia Here.;are a few: Glasgow, Ross, : -M'Gregor Lowno, M'Pherson, Jf'Lean, M'Lcay, Bruce Duncan,. ana Sutherland. ■'' .'' ■ '; ' I A good deal of the Turakiua country has been jscrub land,, while. other parts have been very, heavy manuka, and. the balance bush land.
