Tho Russian police raided fivo Johannite dens, and found a hundred and twenty emaciated children,'between two and eleven years of age, confined in darkness for the purpose of mortifying the flesh and thereby gaming salvation. i The children had been badly beaten, and their knees were lacerated through prolonged kneeling. [Tho Johannites are followers of the late Father John of Kronstadt, but ho is understood to have repudiated them. In Ins heydav it was the practice of uneducated people to ascribe to lather John fupernatural powers, and almost tp deify him. Last year tho Holy Synod ordered that all members of the Johannite sect bo anathematised.]
