WELLINGTON RACING CLUB.

WINTER MEETING AT TRENTHAM. TAUIRA WINS THE. WINTER.HURDLBSI. SIR FRISCO THE HANDICAP. With a steady rain falling in the city on Saturday morning,, it; was .difficult to. imagine tiho existence, of. any but unpleasant weather at Trentham, and those who journeyed to the Wellington Racing Club's meeting went but prepared for rain... But it had been fine'at Trentham since daybreak,'and the conditions generally were quite favourable for the opening day of tho meeting, though the attendance was considerably affected.' It .was, however, quite up'to the average attendance at a winter meeting. Speculation on the totalisator was fairly brisk,, and, during, the, afternoon, the ; sum of £9904 was passed through-tie machine, as against £7758; on-the first , day of 'the last winter meeting. Tho bookmakers- did' not muster in such Btrong force aB usual, only nineteen being ilicensed —seven in tho. paddock and twelvo' in tho , legor. After tho_ fifth race, one of those in tho paddock, decided- that, business'.was' unpayable, and, for the last two-events,-he, joined tho ranks of the backers. .It was a really bad day for the fielders, iasfour first favourites and two second favourites prevailed, while the double—Sir Frisco; and Tauira-Tdepleted the ring of a large sum of money. lie, racing. track was heavy after the previous day's rain, but the going was not by' any means treacherous; and there were surprisingly'few soratchings in the seven races. Eighty-two horses ; took, part! in ,tho programme, and the; field of sixteen • which ioced■ t!he starter.in the Winter Hurdles is the largest in the history ; of the race. Good finishes were tho result' of the two ■ first races, -but-the remainder jwero easily won. In the ParUameh'lary ■ Handicap,' the locallyowned Sir .Friscb J/qok charge from the barrier, rise,■ and. was.'never. headed, while, ;in the;- Winter. Hurdles,' .Tauira led . .throughout, and won with ridiculous' ease.:'.'. Details of the, racing aromas follow ;-r-.... , : - : ; /.= ■■

NOTES ON THE RACING/ [Bt Glehcob] Of tho nine starters in. tho ': Stewards' Handicap, Sneet Angelus and St. Bill were tho only two that were backed te any extent, but the first-named was easily favourite. M'Comb drew an outside position with Sweet Angelus, and, when tbo tapes flow up, both St. Bill and Martyrium commenced quicker than tho Multiform filly, St. Bill quickly bad a gap between himself and tho rest of tho field, and, when tho straight was reached, Sweet Angelus, though she nad passed Martyrium, still bad a ooupk» of lengths to catch up to St. Bill. It almost looked as if M'Comb held tbo leader too cheaply, for, though ho drove Swe«t Angelas along at a groat rate from the St. Bill still had a neck advantago wken the post'was reached. Wimmera and San Fernando stowed up at tho distance, but both wore tiring again at tho finish. Longner appeared to be uncomfortable in tho going.
