SHEEP AILMENTS.

ADDRESS BY DR. ,HILCENDORF. .■:■■ ;Dr. Hilgondorf, of Lincoln College, gave an interesting address last week on "Animal. Parasites of Sheep." Ho showed a list of ■■twenty-six .animal parasites of sheep, but dealt "in detail with only,, the few that wero . prevalent in Now Zealand. These included: Sheep's' nasal bot-fly, which was described as never being fatal to .tho, sheep, although it caused them considerabjo inconvenience,' but for which no■ efficient remedy, was known; ' ticks and lice, which he said wero thoroughly, kept in check by judicious dipping:.. tapeworm and, bladder-worm, 1 especially the blad-der-worm, on tho sheep's brain, causing tho disease known as "gid -or "sturdy." Cases of thai disease.occurred not infrequently, but it could be cured by the removal of the. cyst from the brain. It was stated 1 that the sheep could be kept entirely freedom "sturdy" if 'dogs were not allowed ,'to eat sheep's heads; > or if the.dogs.wore periodically treated with. some vermifuge, such as areca nut or santonin. Dr. Hilgondorf added that the trouble and expense of treating dogs yearly for a, great number of years would be much more than recompensed by the protection of a single valuable sheep from the effects of the cyst. It was shown that in various' cir-i cumstahces each of these" three methods gives satisfactory results, but it was 'stated, that the method recently propounded by < Mr. Blackloy' in the "Agricultural \ and •: Pastoral Association's Journal," : of sprinkling the salt in the sheep's salt boxes with turpentine, promised to bo a'yery efficacious. and srmplo method: of dealing .with! lung-worm; in every case in which' sheep were sufficiently .eager for the salt to lick up the required ■quantity of, turpentine'.- v . .■"■•'•' ; ' , FACTORY VACANCIES; ■ : The Oaonui Co-operative.
