: A successful demonstration of an electrical' invention—the % Ncwbould automatic icut-out." for. trolly-Swires—was given'.in the yard of tho Tramway'■' Power House'yesterday afternoon, before a: number of. interested'.:, '.'spectators,'. '. including. -Mr .-Stuart Richardson, .City Electrical-Engineer: The object of the-invention is to! instantaneously: cut off J)b,'e current when a break occurs in a' trpllyrwire, \and thus 'to enable, the broken wire to .bo handled immediately without danger. Temporary wires, suitable for-a 500; volts ' electro-motive force, were erected on poles in. the yard, and the machine (a; handy little contrivance worked with .small' hand-levers) was fixed to one pf, •the poles;'and connected with -the', overhead .wires'. 'Two/.groups .'of ..globe- Jiglits, . .were erected-in the.yard, in order/to demonstrate now. quickly ,'tb.e,'; invention docs 'its work.' The test .was divided'into two sections.. In the first .place,. a ; wire was broken wh.en'the "cut-out" was not in operation, and it was shown; .by. means, of- tho lights, that, the current 'was still on, ■'. and. the. wire'.' "alive," and therefore .dangerous. In. the second demonstration,,*with:'.the patent cut-out applied, the;wire-was. again :brokch, and, before it, had fairly parted, the current had been cut .'oft, the lights going out instantly by the immediato cessation of the current. The wire reached tho ground "lifeless," and was handled freely, immediately; .Tho 'patent 'was" tested several times,-and -always-, with the same' successful result. The company which is'running tho patont intends bringing it.'under ,the. notice of the biggest electrical companies, in Australasia and abroad. ■' '[ ■ The two most powerful influences upon the Booial Jifo of the pcoplo are tho Church and _ tto:atog(u- i -Bißliop of.London,..:.
