As:'thipgs stand at.present "there are' 106 gas lamps in use for the light-. , ing of the old Melrose; district, but with the /completion! of: the.city's extensions a>consider-' ablo ■ improvement; will 'be effected *in the lighting' of the. suburbs.; The -contract with the Gas Company expires in .December, and.it is: antioipatcd that the new.-• 'scheme will'-be' so far advanced -by December'!as. to give: the suburban residents a start with electricity by that time. In arranging the eohemeof extensions ;• 215 electrip lights -are provided for, to meet the.growing needs, of;the distriot in place of the< present-lOfi gas lamps. Provision has been made for automatically, switching on, along the tram track,'the incandescent lamps, when- the arc'lights go off at midnight. Over .300. poles and 40 r mues "of , wire will be reqiiiiced.; for the extensions.. The total cost of the: work will be about ..£2512, and will be apportioned asunder':—Brooklyn, 50 lamps; i 625; Mand Bay;" 51 lamps, ; • Roseneath, 21 lamps, J!170;' Kilbirnie, 70 lamps, ,Kaiwarra (Hutt Road), ,7 lamps, ;E9O; Mitchelltown, new mam to station, There are; at present 23 gas lamps and 11 electrio lamps for street-lighting purposes in Brooklyn,: and the lighting is to be rearranged and an'increase of 27 electric;lights given.•:. ' Island: Bay is at present supplied with 30 gas lamps/ and 51 electric .lights are to replace these and extend the lighting into streets which are not lighted at present'nnd in which an -extension is warranted by ■ of- houses. The residents of Roseneath have been agitating for -better- lighting for eomo .time past,' and their W gas. lamps will bo replaced' by 21 electric lamps, which provide for a number of extensions,' a portion of what has been asked for by '.the district. Kilbirnie, whero work is at present - under way, has now 28-gas lamps. The scheme of lighting has been rearranged, positions having been ' selected ' for i 2 new lamps, making a total of 70 for the district. -Kaiwarra-will not : be affected to such 'an ex-' tent as .-..the "other.-' districts, the present seven gas lamps on the Hntt Rdnd simply being replaced by an, equal number- of electric .lamps. Mitchclltown': will; gain one. light,, the 'idea being to -in'stal!fivelelectrio lamps!in place of the four gas lamps:at present in.use. . '•.■'■
