ACCIDENTS AND FATALITIES.
(By Tdreraph.—Press Association.! L_« INQUEST AT PORIRUA ASYLUM. WOMAN'S BODY. FOUND; Word was received by tho polico on Saturday evening that the body of a woman, Susan Gray, had been found in a roservoir dam about one mile and a half from Porirua. The body was noticed by Dr. Scanncll at about 4.30 p.m., and was identified as that of an inmate of the asylum, who had been missed smco Juno* 16. Repeated searches had been made, and the danv had been dragged without avail. Deceased had been in tho,habit of wandering from homo, and was committed to tho .asylum from the Palmerston district. Sho was ongaged at laundry work in tho institution, 1 and had evidently wandored away from the drying green. Dr. M'Arthur, S.M. -(Coroner) proceeded to Porirua yesterday, and conducted an inquest. A verdict of "Found Drowned" was recorded. v . , - A MISSING MUSTERER. Constable Satherley, of Otaki, reported last evening that a young man, Hugh Cockrell, ivlio had been out mustering cattlo on Friday, was missing.. Cockroll, with a man named Jtidd, set out on Friday morning and was driving 'a mob of cattlo ovor 'rough, broken country at Otaki Qorge, 18 miles away.' At midday some of the cattle broko away, Judd wont back to round them up, telling Cockrcll to remain with "the herd until he returned. Ho was-absent for about an hour, and, on coming back, Cockroll was nowhere to be seen. Tho cattle had dispersed into tho bush. The matter was not reported, to the polico until 8 o'clock on Saturday night, and about 100 /residents scoured tho country all yesterday without finding any trace of tho missing man. The party had to walk seven mdes over tho roughest part of tho track. The polico and settlers will continue tho search to-day. Cockrell was a delicate .young man'of 22 years of age, and had been treated for 'heart trouble. He was formerly a clerk in the Timber Company's office at" To Aro. FOUND IN A DITCH. Tho Blenheim police telegraphed yesterday to Inspector Ellison that a widower, Samuel Elsmoro (64), who was a market gardener at Grovetown, and a very old resident of I the district, had been found smothered in a I large_ drainage ditch near his house that morning. Ho was last seen alive by his son at 9.30 o'clock on Saturday night.' Deceased leaves a grown-up family. CHILD'S SUDDEN DEATH. A thirteen-months-old' child. Ivy Bertha Ford, daughter of Ernest Ford, of 43 Molesworth Street, died suddenly on Saturday morning. An inquest was arranged to take placo yesterday morning, but as Dr. M'Aithur, SM. (coroner), was caUed out of town.j tho proceedings were postponed until to-day. KNOCKED DOWN BY A CAB. Shortly after 6 o'clock on Saturday evening, Owen Coyle, of 70 Dixon Street, was proceeding to his work, and, while near' the wharf, was knocked down by a tramcar. Ho snstained slight injuries,, which were attended to at the hospital AN ABRASION WHICH ENDED FATALLY. (By TelegraplL-Presa Association.) Dunodln, July 11. A man named James Sharkie; a wharf labourer, aged 44 years, died in tho hospital this morning as th« result of blood-poison-'jng. Deceased was working ooal on tho AVarrimoo on July 2, when ho sustained an abrasion on tho back of tho hand. He worked for four days, and then consulted a doctor, who ordered his removal to tho hospital, whore tho arm was amputated, bnt without avail. THE UNCERTAINTY OF GUNS. \ r j_i v L - July 10. It appears that tie deceased was testing tho ground through a swampy place with the butt end of a gun, when it went off, tho full charge shattering the palm of ono of his hands and forearm, and entering his right sido. Death occurred shortly after his removal to'his homo. A YOUNG WOMAN'S DEATH. i . Auckland, July 10. An inquest was opened at tho hospital this morning on tho body of Clara F. Waldon, aged 19, admitted on Juno 30, and who died yesterday. Evidence was given that the deceased,became ill;on Juno 24, after, eating some fruit. At this stag© the inquest was adjourned, at the request of the police. DIED WITHOUT MEDICAL ATTENTION. . Chrlstohurch, July 10. ■ A man named Robert •M'Alister .died at ■his residence at 3 plclock. this morning. He had not been attended by a doctor and was dead before'.one could be summoned.
