NATIVE LEASES.
' Sir,—l beg to contradict Aeting-Promicr Carroll regarding Maori' leases. ' They are not subject to thje control of Native Land Boards, for no. more injustice could be done to tho Natives of Tongoio than for Sir R. StouVand Mr. Ngata to recommend and grant a lease not of the area limited by lan. but-of 30,000 acres, not for a short term, but , for fifty years. The Natives refused to' lease, [ oe they wanted it. for, themselves, hut in face.^of' their' refusal a lease has been granted without' the sanction of.the.Land Boaid, and the Court of Appeal upheld the lease. I yentnro to say before five years are over a railway"will pass tlirough it, and thero are to my knowledgesome of the finest limestone hills in the Dominion.—l am; etc. ' ■:■ : . /•'--.•• .-...■ ; I.
