REPORTS OF COMMITTEES; Tho fortnightly meeting ot tho City Council was held last e\einng. Theio wero present: lli3 Woislnp tlio Major (Dr. A. K. Newman), Councillors Luke, Smith, Cohen, Balhngor, Frost, Trevor, Atkinson, Devme, Fitzgerald, Carmichael, M'Laion, Fletchor, Hindmarsli, and Morrah FINANCE AND PROPERTY. Tho Finance and Property Committee recommended:—Thsyt tho consent of tho council bo. granted to tho party wall agreement betwoon tho Union Steam Ship Company, Messrs. Murray, IMorta and Co., and the corporation; that no further action bo taken against the person who broke tho fire-alarm at Hankey Street; that the-action taken by Uio City Engineer- with regard to the filling out of Waitoa Road, Hataitai, iu front of Mr. Cooke's property, be approved; that a reduction of £1 bo mado in tho license fee of a hoarding at the corner of Willis and Morcer. Streets; that ono month's leave of absence bo granted to .Inspector Fosterv who is leeovenng from an illness, that an I account amounting to £118 14s 4d. be forwarded to tho Government for tho cost of I repairing the water main at Rocky Point, on tho Butt Road; that irrecoverable rates amounting to £1116 2s. 10d. for the jear ending March 31, 1909, be-written off; that arrangements be made with the Union Bank for temporary advances on tho Northland AVater Supply Loan pending the flotation of tho loan. Tho report was adopted. TRAMWAYS. Recommendations were made as under by the Poner Stations and Tramwajs Committeo:—That the offer of the Board of Controll to allow the. corporation to • use their telephone poles at Thorndon Quay; in order to carry out span wire construction at the Thorndon Quay tramway section, provided tho corporation bears half the , cost of tho maintenance of tho polos, be accepted with thanks; that tenders bo called for tho porniancnt way and overhead-construction materials required in connection with the construction of the Maranui tramway; that tho application of the Wellington Women's Christian Association for a tramway pats for their lady visitor be not granted. The adoption of the report was agreed to. RESERVES. The Baths'and Reserves Committee, recommended- That tho sum of £12 be paid to Mr. G. W. Connor for tho improvements carried out to his/section of Town Belt lately resumed by the council. That a letter of thanks be forwarded to tho Duko of Bedford for presenting a collection of animals to tho Zoo. ... That, if .there is no . legal objection, Mr E. Tonks be granted a lease of sections 11, 42, 44, and 47, Toftn Bolt, for a period of fivo jears, that he fences tho sections to the satisfaction of tho City Engineer, and that the council have tho right to resume sarao at any time. Tho report was adopted BY-LAWS AND STREET LIGHTING. Tlio By-laws, Firo Brigade, and Street Lighting Committpo lecoinmended.—that the application of Messrs Humphries Bros, for permission to construct' two new dwell-ings-at Oxford Road, off Tasinan Street, bo granted, that the application of Mr. F F. Camoion, for permission to erect a dwelling contrary to the provisions of the by-laws, be refdsed; that the offer , of Mr. S. E. Powrie, of Garden Road, to dedicate a portion of his land to tho council for street, purposes bo not accepted, as tho proposed dedication would not benefit tho '/council or the public; that tho owners of Mudge's Terrace, off Adelaide Road, and'Rison Grote, oft Austin Street, bo informed that as theso streets are private streets, tho erection of lamps will havo to\be undortaken by them. ,That the petitioners for a lamp at'Upton Terrace, off Tmakori Road, bo informed that I the circuit will bo changed from carbon filament to Osram lamps as soon , as possible, obviating tho necessity of erecting a lamp there. Tho committee reported —That they have accepted the tender of >the Palmer En r gineenng Company for tho supplj of a motor chassis, and the quotations of tho Merry weather Company for a fire pump, and of M'Gregor and Company for hose,' as provided in this year's fire brigade's estimates.
